Marie Curie Charity
The inspiration for the charity was Madame Curie, a Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person and only woman to win twice, the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two different sciences, and was part of the Curie family legacy of five Nobel Prizes. She was also the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris, and in 1995 became the first woman to be entombed on her own merits in the Panthéon in Paris.
Her achievements included the development of the theory of radioactivity (a term that she coined), techniques for isolating radioactive isotopes, and the discovery of two elements, polonium and radium. Under her direction, the world’s first studies into the treatment of neoplasms were conducted using radioactive isotopes. She founded the Curie Institutes in Paris and in Warsaw, which remain major centres of medical research today. Marie Curie died in 1934, aged 66, at a sanatorium in Sancellemoz (Haute-Savoie), France, of aplastic anemia from exposure to radiation in the course of her scientific research and in the course of her radiological work at field hospitals during World War I.
In 1930 The Marie Curie Hospital opened by Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, specialized in the “radiological treatment of women suffering from cancer and allied diseases”. After the hospital was destroyed during WW2, the Marie Curie International Memorial was formally established on 6 July 1948, and shortly afterwards became the Marie Curie Memorial Foundation now known as Marie Curie. I have had my eye on the Pixie boots for over a year. When I had a choice between the Pixie and the Whisper boot last year the whisper won out only because of the more winter friendly sole. The Pixie boot with a flat rubber sole is great for mild weather where you still want a boot but do not need the traction for ice and snow.
The boot design reminds me of many from the late 1960s and 1970s when the boho hippie style was in vogue. Soft leather suede body with tassels dangling from the heel say retro in every possible way. The Pixie comes in a variety of colors that echo the past as well as more modern tastes. Only the grey boot with daffodil flower pattern cloth lining is part of the charity fundraiser. Luckily this happened to be my favorite of the color choices : )
I received my standard size 6.5 which fit me perfectly in the Whisper boot. The Pixie feels a half size too long which is consistent with most of Hotter’s other heels and shoes. I recommend USA customers order a half size down. The only fit issue I have is with the center vamp height. I have a taller arch than most women and I can’t comfortably get my foot into the boot or move my foot about with wiggle room. I am so disappointed in this. Curse my high arch foot genes! I may try wearing them around the house for a day and they would probably loosen up. Or I might re-gift them to a friend and spread some holiday cheer.
All in all I love the styling of the boot, the quality craftsmanship, locally made in England, and the adorable daffodil print inside. Just because they may not work for my feet doesn’t mean they wouldn’t be perfect for you. Grab yourself a pair and know that you are also supporting a worthy charity.
